One of my resolutions this year was to make time for brekky, that no matter what I'm doing or what's happening
I have to have time for the most important meal of the day. On weekdays, my 'working breakfast' varies from a good bowl of fruit and muesli to a naughty (but forgivably delicious and good for curing hangovers) bacon cream cheese bagel. On weekends, I'd have more time to prep for brunch so I get to have better meals like beef sliders or vegetarian sausages with some corn kernels. However, I think four days out of seven, you'd probably see me munching on an all-butter croissant and a massive cup of coffee.
And now I'm on a quest to find the yummiest croissant in town.
Let's start off with
Starbucks, because
the red cuppajoes are back and I wanted my favourite toffee nut cappuccino.
I order my coffee first and just like last year the barista looks at me, baffled.
'We have toffee nut latte,' he stresses a bit louder than I like and I shake my head and say it's a toffee nut
cappuccino I want. You know? Cappuccino, with toffee nut syrup. It finally clicks so he shouts an order. I then point to one of the big croissants on the pastry window. '
I want one of them croissants please,' I say. He picks a
rocky road and I shake my head again and lie, '
Too early for chocolate!' I politely say it's the butter croissant I want. He does the *facepalm* move and winks at me, '
Sorry, no coffee yet.' Oh the irony.

I get to my desk and prep for the morning feed. The croissant is big and looks ready to be devoured in its glory. But then it feels a bit heavy, and the more I look at it the more it feels like a brick. I take a bite and it tastes... slightly bland. Another bite... and doughy. Another bite... quite honestly, like yesterday's leftovers. Another bite... oh but it's not as flaky as I want it to be.
I finish the whole thing feeling a bit confused and a bit pudgy. It was definitely heavy for a croissant and was not as buttery as I hope it would be. The more I bit into the thing, the more it felt like I was eating some sort of
brioche. And though they're technically cousins from
les boulangeries des France there's a massive difference,
oui?
Verdict: 1/5
At £1.30 each, it's big but that was the only thing I liked about it. Such a disappointment, Starbucks. Then again, they were never really known for their pastries were they? You're better off getting a cheesecake, or a cookie. At least I had a nice cup of toffee nut infused cappuccino. Not latte. ;)
